Excuses Are The Lies We Tell Ourselves To Justify Our Inaction
EXCUSES, EXCUSES, EXCUSES!!!
We all make them from time to time and sometimes they are valid and genuine but for the most part they are lies you tell yourself to make you feel better or to justify your inaction
The truth is excuses will kill your health and fitness because it's far to easy to pretend your excuse is real
You see the reality of your excuses is only yours. There are guys out there in exactly the same position as you with the same barriers, same limitations and same opportunity to make excuses but they don't
Sound harsh?...maybe but when it comes down to it it's true.
I'm not undermining how tough it is to juggle so much, trust me I get it but if you have a plan, improve you habits and change your lifestyle you can achieve so much and your health will thank you
As I've said we all make excuses and there is lots of them but there are some I hear time and time again even though lots of the guys I work with are in desperate need of a health and fitness overhaul. Without sounded dramatic your life could depend on it
Here are the 3 excuses I hear most
1. I'm Too Busy
So you have a job, a business, a partner, kids, a social life...the list goes on. I agree you are busy as hell and as I've mentioned it's going to be tough especially at the start when you need to work harder to build better habits but no one is too busy.
Now the gym may not be the answer and you may need another solution but with as little as your bodyweight and 15 minutes you can start making a change.
Another problem I have with the too busy excuse is if you have any time for social media, TV, 10 pints down the pub, 15 minutes reading a blog ;) then you aren't too busy you just aren't prioritising or just don't care enough.
2. It's Too Expensive
This is another priority problem.
If you're reading this it's likely you have one of the latest smartphones in your hand right now and its probably worth around £300. Since when has a phone been more important than your health let alone all the other things you don't need but still have.
Will Smith has a great quote -Too many people spend money they haven't earned, to buy things they don't want, to impress people they don't like.
We all do it, nice watches, cars, the TV thats too big to fit on your front room. These things are great if thats what you want but ultimately when all is said and done they mean nothing. Your health means everything and more so if you have a family and people who rely on you.
3. I Have An Injury
I work with guys over 30 prodominately and there is one thing I've realised...we are all banged up or have some injury.
This may be from something we did years ago, from too much sitting/driving, from little activity, from behaving like a numpty when you were last drunk and lots of other reasons
It's a fact of life as we get older there will be some wear and tear and from time to time we will have niggles and soreness in places we didn't realise we had places.
You can allow that to completely limit you in what you do and become a reason to do nothing, gain weight, feel terrible, have to energy and so on or you can suck it up and realise it's part of getting older
I'm going to break these solutions down to combat the specific excuses we see most based on what I have said I hear above
1. I'm Too Busy
You need to make time not find it.
Finding time is hoping that something that doest exist will appear. We all have the same amount of time in a day and we suggest less than 3 hours total exercise a week in order to get results you wouldn't dream are possible
It's about being efficient and effective with your time and about scheduling it so that it becomes a habit. This becomes a lot easier when you have other people you become accountable to as well, a training partner, a gym program a spouse. Anyone who is going to help you get it done.
2. It's Too Expensive
Expense...there is the problem
Since when has your health been an expense? It's an investment
But it only works as an investment if you know what you are doing actually ends in the results you desire. The problem with the normal commercial gym is that it does become an expense because you get nowhere and don't use it. Thats just wasting money rather than using your investment to get the results you want.
Also can you really not afford it or is it too low on your priority list? Like I said earlier we spend too much time buying things we don't need to impress people we don't like.
Start investing in yourself and your health and you will soon realise the quality of life you can have...in my eyes and probably those of your partner and children that is priceless
3. I Have An Injury
Like I said earlier, which one of us doesnt have some sort of injury?
The good thing is lots of injuries and ailments disappear when you increase your activity and start to put your body back into balance through strength training and flexibility work.
Also for every exercise you can't do due to injury there'll be 100 you can. It's about creating a plan that suits you and allows you to workout pain free while getting results. A good coach will advise you on what you can and can't do and should be able to adapt to your needs.
Lot's of times I see injury as a mindset thing, do you get a niggle and fear the worst and seek a diagnosis of severe injury (which a physio or other injury specialist will be keen to give you as it means business for them) or do you understand that slight strains and niggle are a part of life, even more so as we get older. Don't fear the worst, take a step back and assess the situation.
One more thing on the injury front is I see lots of guys paying injury specialists to fix them but they never seem to get better. If you are paying someone to fix you and they aren't delivering sack them off now!!! they are ripping you off.
THE WRAP UP
Excuse are rife and it's easier to make an excuse and not try anything new than challenge yourself and risk any sort of failure.
As men we all fear failure, it's the thing that holds as back most.
